Are DIY Wedding Favors Right For You?

On your big day, you want it to look just right. It has to have flare, romance, and a look and feel that reflects you and your special someone. This includes the little details just as much as it does the dress and cake, so the favors have to be unique to you. In order to assess what kind of favors to get, you have to first look into what your budget will allow. If your budget is tight, and you want your big day to be unique, the best way to capture the feel is to make the favors yourself. The first step in making DIY wedding favors is to decide on a theme.

The first step is to decide on a theme. This step is huge, because without a theme, you have no idea what kind of favors to make. One place to look at in deciding on a theme is how you and your special someone met. Was it at the ocean? Maybe a BBQ? Was there any special details that the two of you would recognize if referenced in the decorations on your big day? Little things that trigger memories between the two of you are the perfect place to start when deciding on the theme of your favors.

Another good place to start is in tradition. Do you two have something you do together often? Do your families have any traditions you would like to include? Is there anything that you two have in common such as hobbies that you take part in together, or a recurring event that you attend? Any of these things can be included if you feel they represent what you and your better half believe in or enjoy doing. It is all a matter of what part of your wedding you want people to take home to remember.

Once these points are brought up, you could look at the time of the year. A lot of couples base their themes on the season the weddings are to take place in, or holidays near which the big day is due to commence. This is a great way to decide on the colors that will be used in the decorations. Another possibility is the favorite colors of the bride and groom, if they correspond well.

The next step is how outrageous you’d like to go. If your wedding is small and down home, maybe you want a quaint accent piece as your wedding favors. This would be more simple to make, and would probably cost less. Or perhaps your wedding is going to be something huge and extravagant, in which case a bolder, larger piece would be more befitting. Keep in mind, however, that the bigger you go, the more money and time you are going to be putting into the makings of your favors. However, any amount of money and time should be well worth it if it means a more perfect day for the two of you.

The next step is to buy your materials. This includes any confetti, flowers, ribbons, etc that will be displayed in them just as much as it includes any glues, tapes, or wires that will be used to hold them together. This part has a lot to do with the last few steps. For example, I have seen ocean-themed weddings use sand dollars with a candle of the bride’s favorite color and scent hot-glued to the top of it and a bunch of ribbons that had been braided together tied around the base as a fun yet elegant wedding favor, which would be good for a smaller wedding since it’s a simpler display. This couple took a lot of the above tips into consideration before picking the design of the favors, since the groom makes candles, the candles were the bride’s favorite color, and the shell tied them into the theme of the rest of the wedding.

Now that you have all of this, you have to actually put the favors together. This step is simple with a little creativity and bit of patience. Just visualize what you want, and piece together the materials, and then apply whatever binding tool you have chosen to hold it together. I have seen people use fish bowls with marbles in the bottom and silk flowers coming out of the top, and I’ve seen some use bubbles with a shear fabric bunched up over the top and tied off with a decorative ribbon. It all depends on your taste.

This has been just a short list of ideas on how to make your wedding day just that much more unique and interesting. Don’t stress yourself out if it seems like too much, it’s really only as hard as you make it. Remember, no matter what you decide to make, your guests will be happy knowing that you put that extra amount of thought into the favors that they get to take home with them to remember your big day.
