Its very clear that the world is at a crossroads at the moment – economically & politically and even culturally. Several political conflicts in the middle east and other developing nations, combined with the threat of nuclear force from Iran and North Korea, at a time when the global economy is in a mild downturn, and several regions are really suffers for it.
There are 2 separate types of leaders whom have the power to change the world for the better and help drag us out of these dark times, these are the political leaders and business leaders.
The difference between the two, is that political leaders are accountable to their whole population, and business leaders are only directly (and legally) responsible to a restricted group of stakeholders whom are financially reliant upon business leaders good stewardship of corporations.
So, which type of leader can help the world in this wide-reaching current crisis? The answer is both. Barack Obama has shown the great power that a world leader can possess. His determination to change America’s health care systems and foreign policy is clear, but he also has a wider agenda to restore peace in the world and improve the world’s perception of an aggressive and ‘dim-witted’ USA.
But while political leadership figures can deliver great speeches and establish good economic policy – only the leaders actively involved in commerce – i.e Business Leadership, can make real decisions that produce and create the sustainable income that economies generate.
It is the role of these business leaders to actively push our economies forward. So what are they doing to improve their leadership? Several things, is the answer. Senior managers perfect their leadership styles by visiting leadership styles websites and reading leadership books frequently.
The best leadership books are generally those written by expert author whom have made it their life mission to learn and grow in the personal development area of leadership. These are people like Andrew Carnegie, Dale Carnegie and Stephen Covey. They’ve written books that are in the top 100 books sold in all time, so are definitely worth checking out.
Many business leaders are also employing leadership coaches to help them discover more about their own leadership styles, and find out which leadership style would actually work best for their specific company. Leadership coaches charge a large fee for their services – but in large corporations like General Electric, this fee is insignificant compared to the large and scaled effect that good leadership styles could have on the organisation. A 10,000 fee for a 1% improvement in profits is an absolute bargain, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Business leaders are also focusing on advanced leadership theory such as that of ‘leadership management’. Leadership management is the idea that leadership and management – rather than being conflicting roles – can be harmonised into that of a brilliant leader/manager for small and medium sized enterprises. Key leadership skills needed are those such as the ability to delegate properly, have patience and trust in others.
So it would seem that the world is facing an unprecedented change in the state of power, but as you can see – the topic of leadership is definitely being utilised to help combat any negative side effects.
